ANC: oppositionists kidnapped in Armenia

In Yerevan, members of a youth wing of the oppositional union named "Armenian National Congress" (ANC) were kidnapped. One of them - Armen Gevorkyan - managed to run away.

Sources from the ANC have reported that in different areas of the capital of Armenia young members of the organization who disseminated propaganda leaflets about the sanctioned May Day picket were attacked.

Leaders of the ANC suspect that the kidnappers are policemen dressed as civilians, since other policemen who happened to be nearby gave no reaction to young men's appeals for help.

Later it became known about runaway of Armen Gevorkyan, one of the detainees. The opposition knows the model and licence number of the car, in which the activist was taken away. Besides, the journalists who are covering the action of the opposition during which the attack and kidnapping took place handed over to the ANC photos of the persons-figurants of the incident.

The police were notified about the kidnapping; however, Gevorkyan refused to file a complaint. Nothing is known so far about the fate of other detainees, as the "Gazeta.Ru" reports.

In his turn, Major General Alik Sargsyan, Chief of Armenian Police, has categorically disagreed with a possibility that policemen gave no reaction to incidents at dissemination of leaflets. Mr Sargsyan has added that there are no facts confirming this sort of law enforcers' behaviour, as the "ArmInfo" reports.
