Two activists of the opposition pardoned in Armenia

Under Decree of President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan, two figurants of the case about events on March 1, 2008, in Yerevan - activists of the opposition David Agayan and Nver Stepanyan - were released from prison. They filed their pardon petitions to the name of the President back in December 2008.

David Agayan was arrested in mid-May of 2008 and charged with resistance to power representatives. The court sentenced him to 5 years of imprisonment. Nver Stepanyan convicted to 3.5 years of imprisonment, was charged with "participation in mass disorders".

Armen Hachatryan, head of the centre for legal support of political prisoners at the Armenian National Congress (ANC) has confirmed to journalists that both released persons were enlisted by the ANC as political prisoners.
According to Mr Hachatryan, the prison conditions have extremely negatively told the state of health of both political prisoners; this was the reason why they wrote their pardon petitions to the incumbent President.
