Human rights defenders condemn Georgian authorities for persecuting protesters
In Georgia, law enforcers brutally beat protesters, and criminal cases are being instituted against activists on formal grounds.
The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that earlier, political analysts had noted that the protest actions held by supporters of European integration in Tbilisi were gathering more and more people. Even those who do not consider themselves supporters of the opposition are also participating in the protest actions.
In Georgia, law enforcers carried out harsh dispersals of the protests, using tear gas and water cannons. The police also detained protesters. On December 20, human rights defenders criticized the awarding of law enforcers after the dispersal of the protests in Tbilisi.
By using excessive force against protesters, the Georgian authorities violated the country’s legislation and international norms, the “Human Rights Watch” (HRW) international organization claims on its website.
During the protest actions, law enforcers widely used clearly punitive measures, beating demonstrators without any reason. Among the injuries sustained by the demonstrators were diagnosed brain concussions, broken noses, ribs, abrasions, and bruises all over the body.
The Georgian authorities convicted dozens of demonstrators, and when human rights defenders pointed out human rights violations, the country’s officials did not take effective measures in response, the HRW’s report states.
