Parents of Chechen native detained after his story about torture
In the Chechen town of Argun, policemen have detained the parents of Magomed Chagaev, who told about torture by law enforcers and discrimination against Muslims in jails.
Law enforcers have detained Said-Emi Chagaev, 67, and Malika Chagaeva, 62, the "Memorial" Centre for Human Rights Defence* has reported.
The day before, an interview was posted in the "Islam Kharikhanov" YouTube channel, in which Chagaev told about a fabricated case against him and discrimination against Muslims in institutions of the Russian Federal Penitentiary Service (known as FSIN). He also told how he was detained at the age of 18 and tortured.
"The Chagaev spouses were taken to a station of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) for an unknown purpose. They may be in danger," human rights activists have stated.
*As reported on the website of the Ministry of Justice (MoJ), the reason for including on March 1, 2024, the unregistered "Memorial" Centre for Human Rights Defence (CHRD) into the roster of foreign agents was the spread of "inaccurate information aimed at creating a negative image of the Russian Federation, as well as the Russian Armed Forces."
