ECtHR finds violation of Astrakhan activist Doliev's rights

Mikhail Doliev, an Astrakhan activist, has won the case versus Russia at the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR). Two of his complaints concerned his detentions during protest actions.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on January 23, 2024, a march in support of the oppositionist Alexei Navalny was held in Astrakhan and was not opposed by law enforcers. On January 26, law enforcers detained Mikhail Doliev, who is also the head of the Astrakhan branch of the "Parnas" Party, and Yaroslav Savin, a member of the political council of the branch; they both took part in the march.

Doliev now has refugee status in Germany and has no right to travel outside Germany. The ECtHR has awarded him compensation of EUR 4000.

According to Mikhail Doliev, the ECtHR's decision is strengthening the faith in the fairness of the European justice. He knows that Russia has left the ECtHR and refused to enforce its decisions. "We'll think with an advocate about how we can get the awarded amount. Maybe we'll apply to arrest Russia's accounts abroad," Mr Doliev has shared his plans.
