Kadyrov's nephew gets under UK sanctions

The British authorities have included Yakub Zakriev, a nephew of the head of Chechnya, who now heads the "Danone Russia" Company, into the sanctions list.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Yakub (Ibragim) Zakriev, a nephew of Ramzan Kadyrov, the head of Chechnya, who is Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Agriculture of Chechnya, became Director General of the "Danone Russia" JSC, after Vladimir Putin had transferred the share of the "Danone Russia" owned by a foreign company into the temporary management of the "Rosimuschestvo" (Russian Federal Property Management Agency). Zakriev is also heading the "Danone Trade", a key subsidiary of the "Danone" Company in Russia. On November 3, 2023, the US Treasury included Yakub Zakriev and his father Salman, Ramzan Kadyrov's son-in-law and Vice Speaker of the Chechen Parliament, into the sanctions list.

Chechen authorities gave no comments on the sanctions introduced against Zakriev, the "Caucasian Knot" reader under the nickname darryl.gerlach has noted. "While before, Kadyrov himself and his entourage, as a rule, reacted to such things, especially emphasizing that they were proud to be under Western sanctions," the reader has written.

On March 8, 2022, Japanese authorities included Kadyrov into the list of Russian officials whose assets in Japan were decided to be frozen. The head of Chechnya ridiculed this decision, saying that he had no assets in Japan and is not afraid of their sanctions.

  • Religion experts explain motives for militants’ attacks on synagogue and temple in Dagestan

Ayats (verses) of the Koran, references to which were left by attackers at a synagogue in Derbent, are interpreted by the extremists to justify their confrontation with Jews and Christians, Leonid Syukiyainen and Dmitry Mikulsky point out. The experts suggest that the date of the attack on the Orthodox temple was chosen by the militants because of the Christian holiday celebrated on that day.
