Zakareishvili: Saakashvili will make no concessions to opposition

After the meeting of President of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili with the leaders of the nongovernmental opposition, many oppositionists understood that the event was just Saakashvili's formal gesture aimed at the West, and he is not ready to make any concessions. This was stated by Georgian political scientist Paata Zakareishvili to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

"Although the meeting with Saakashvili gave some results, the issue is not closed. But many have understood that Saakashvili would not go to real negotiations; it was just his PR-campaign and propaganda," said Mr Zakareishvili.

Salome Zurabishvili, leader of the Party "Georgia's Way", was more radical in commenting the meeting. "Saakashvili is a madman," she said in her interview to the German Spiegel.

According to Ms Zurabishvili, President has no guess about the processes actually underway in his country. During his meeting on May 11 with opposition leaders, Saakashvili tried to assure them that all is OK in the country, and 65 percent of the population support him.

She also told the edition that the USA are confusing "support of Saakashvili with support of Georgia," therefore, Europe should initiate pressure on President of Georgia and force him to appoint early election.

Yesterday, on May 14, Irakliy Alasaniya, leader of the "Alliance for Georgia", made an official statement about a new meeting of the opposition with Saakashvili.

In parallel with negotiations, the opposition plans to continue its protest actions. However today at night, oppositionists unblocked the Kostava Street - the central city highway near the building of the Public TV, which was blocked earlier.
