EU High Commissioner will not become intermediary between Georgian opposition and authorities

Javier Solana, High Commissioner of the European Union on Foreign Policy and Safety, who has arrived today to Tbilisi, has stated that he would not mediate the conflict between the opposition and the authorities of Georgia.

"This is Georgia's internal matter, and I can just say that the parties should find common language and start a dialogue," Mr Solana said. "The EU was closely watching the elections, and we gave our recommendations, which should be considered to the authorities of Georgia," he has added, emphasizing that all the parties should "demonstrate their responsibility."

The European Commissioner was satisfied to note his meeting with the Prime Minister of Georgia Vladimir Gurgenidze and said that he had received from him "interesting information on the situation not only in Georgia, but in the region as a whole."

In their turn, representatives of Georgia opposition have stated after their meeting with Solana that they told him about the situation in Georgia "and about the terror of the authorities against their people." David Gamkrelidze, one of the leaders of the opposition, informed the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that the opposition had informed Mr Solana about all the attacks on the members of the opposition.

According to Georgiy Targamadze, leader of the Christian Democratic Movement, at the meeting of the leaders of practically all oppositional parties with Javier Solana, the oppositionists had informed him about their intention to boycott the parliament. According to Mr Targamadze, the EU High Commissioner did not emphasize that "the parties should launch dialogue within the parliament in the name of welfare of the state."
