President of Georgia invites opposition to dialogue
Today, President of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili and a number of culture workers made statements intended to relieve the internal political tension in the country.
"Now, there's no room for radicalism, it's time for dialogue, not for disorders and confrontation - it's time for unity. It's not 1991 now - quite a different epoch. In the recent years, we've built Georgia as a country with strong state institutions, and now there's no time for destruction, it's time to preserve what we have built and get engaged in new construction," the ITAR-TASS quotes Mr Saakashvili as saying.
Today in Tbilisi, local newspapers have published an appeal signed by a number of culture workers who assert that any new civil opposition will be a catastrophe for Georgia, and nobody will be able to understand, who is right and who is wrong. Therefore, the authorities should make compromise steps and agree to certain concessions. The "Russian News Service" reports that Elias II, Catholicos Patriarch of all Georgia, was offered to become an intermediary in these negotiations.
