SC upholds sentence of Volgograd resident Paskar for setting fire to rug near FSB building

The cassation court refused to grant an appeal lodged against the sentence of Igor Paskar, a resident of Volgograd, who was sentenced to 8.5 years of imprisonment for setting fire to a rug near an FSB building in Krasnodar. The above information has been reported by the “OVD-Info”* human rights project.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on May 31, 2023, a court sentenced Volgograd resident Igor Paskar to 8.5 years of imprisonment, finding him guilty of a terror act and vandalism motivated by political hatred. The court of appeal upheld the sentence, although an advocate requested the court to reclassify the charge from the terror act to vandalism. In July, the defence lodged a complaint with the Supreme Court (SC).

According to the investigators’ version, the act of vandalism was the arson of a poster with the letter Z and the inscription: “We do not abandon our people.” Igor Paskar did not agree with the investigators’ attempts to classify his actions as a terror act.
