In Quarter II of 2024, 40 people were killed and 48 others wounded in armed conflict in Northern Caucasus

In the period from January 1 to March 31, 2024, at least 88 people suffered in the armed conflict ongoing in Northern Caucasus. 40 persons were killed, and 48 others were wounded. These are the results of the calculations run by the "Caucasian Knot" based on its own materials and information from open sources.

On April 11, 2024, a counterterrorist operation (CTO) regime was introduced in Nalchik and the Cherek District. Special fighters blocked several suspected militants. After they were offered to surrender, they opened fire on law enforcers. According to the Russian National Antiterrorism Committee (NAC), law enforcers shot dead two members of the grouping that was part of an international terrorist organization and had planned sabotage and terror acts in Kabardino-Balkaria.

At night on April 22, in Karachaevsk, an attack was committed on policemen, when they were patrolling the territory. Unknown persons opened fire on them and then stole their weapons. As a result, Lieutenant Murat Kalakhanov and Sergeant Roman Guschin perished, and another policeman was wounded. Five suspects have been declared wanted: Akhmat and Ruslan Elkanov, Kazbek Djazaev, Ruslan Semyonov and Vladimir Averianov.

At night on April 29, an attack was committed on law enforcers in the village of Mara-Ayagy in the Karachaevsky District; five suspected militants were killed. They were identified as the April 22 attackers on policemen in Karachaevsk. As a result of the attack, Lieutenant Colonel of the Internal Service Anton Valikov and Police Sergeant Major Andrei Artamonov perished; three policemen and a "Rosgvardiya" (Russian National Guard) fighter were wounded.

On May 17, in the village of Adil-Khalk in the Nogai District of Karachay-Cherkessia, a man was killed in a shootout with law enforcers. The FSB treated him as a member of an international terrorist organization who had planned attacks on law enforcers.

On June 23, attacks were committed in Derbent and Makhachkala, in which six suspected militants were killed as part of the introduced counterterrorist operation (CTO). On July 1, Sergey Melikov, the head of Dagestan, clarified that 22 people perished as a result: 17 policemen and five civilians.

The above statistics cannot present the number of victims with 100-percent accuracy. Not all the data get into news tapes. It is not always possible to verify the accuracy of the statements made by law enforcement bodies; and new data on the events of the reporting period sometimes become known after the publication of statistics by the "Caucasian Knot".

Earlier, in Quarter I of 2024, nine people were killed and one wounded. A year ago, in Quarter II of 2023, six people perished, and eight others were wounded.
