Activist in Adygea fined for announcing action in memory of Caucasian War victims
A court in Adygea has fined Ilyas Soobtsokov, a Circassian activist, by 15,000 roubles, treating his announcement of an action in memory of the victims of the Caucasian War as a violation. He has denied the charge of organizing an unsanctioned rally.
The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on May 21, 2024, the Remembrance Day of the Victims of the Caucasian War, actions to mark the 160th anniversary of its end were held in Adygea, Kabardino-Balkaria, Karachay-Cherkessia and the Krasnodar Territory. As a result of the Caucasian War, the Circassians (Adygs) were brought to the brink of extinction, the participants of the rally in Nalchik have stated.
The Takhtamukai District Court of Adygea has treated Ilyas Soobtsokov, the founder of the public organization "Adyge Khase", as the organizer of an unsanctioned rally, since he had posted leaflets about the action on the anniversary of the end of the Caucasian War, the human rights project "OVD-Info"* has informed.
