Court approves sentence for employees of Rostov prison hospital
The Rostov Regional Court has upheld the verdict against doctors of the prison hospital in a case on abuse of power with the use of violence, the “Kommersant” reports.
The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that in January, in Rostov-on-Don, a court sentenced Alexander Lyakh, a former deputy head of the FSIN tuberculosis hospital, to seven years and six months of imprisonment, finding him guilty of organizing torture of patients. Daria Pozdnyakova, the head of the psychiatric department of the hospital, was sentenced to six years, and psychiatrist Anastasia Potorochina to – five years of imprisonment. On March 20, the convicts requested the court to cancel their sentences, insisting that they were not guilty.
In November 2020, a criminal case was instituted after the death of a convict in the Rostov tuberculosis hospital of the Federal Penitentiary Service (known as FSIN). By December 2020, twenty-one convicts complained about unacceptable conditions in the hospital. A year later, a criminal case was instituted for abuse of power in connection with the torture and deaths of prisoners in the hospital, and 62 victims testified against the doctors and Alexander Lyakh.
