Actions in memory of Markelov and Baburova held in Russian cities
In Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Omsk, Riga and other cities of Russia and Europe, rallies were held in memory of Stanislav Markelov, an advocate, and Anastasia Baburova, a "Novaya Gazeta", a journalist; they were shot dead in 2009.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on the 15th anniversary of the murder of Markelov and Baburova, Moscow activists called for laying flowers at the site of their deaths and announced the screening of a film about the murdered journalist.
In Moscow, Nikolai Rybakov, the chairman of the "Yabloko" Party, and members of this party's Moscow branch came out for a commemorative action. They laid flowers at an impromptu memorial at the "Belye Palaty" (White Chambers) Centre in Prechistenka Street in Moscow, the party has reported in its website.
In Saint Petersburg, a commemoration was held in the Field of Mars Square, where activists laid flowers, the "Mr-7.ru" outlet has reported.
Let us remind you that Stanislav Markelov and Anastasia Baburova were shot dead on January 19, 2009 in Moscow after a press conference dedicated to the release from prison of former Colonel, Yuri Budanov, who had served his term on charges of murdering the Chechen girl, Elza Kungaeva. Markelov represented the interests of the suffered party in the Budanov case.
