Saint Petersburg's PO gets interested in fate of Seda Suleimanova, escapee from her parents

The bridegroom of Seda Suleimanova, a native of Chechnya, was invited to the Prosecutor's Office (PO) of Saint Petersburg, where he told how law enforcers took Seda, her fiancée, to Chechnya and forbade her from meeting him.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on September 4, Mansur Soltaev, the Chechen Ombudsperson, reported his repeated visit to Seda Suleimanova. According to his story, the young woman met him in a good mood and expressed no complaints. On October 20, Stanislav Kudriavtsev, Seda's bridegroom, announced that he had converted to Islam and asked to meet her, but received no response from her relatives.

According to the SK SOS Crisis Group*, as of November 6, more than 900 people had contacted the PO and demanded to check the law enforcers' actions in Suleimanova's case.

Let us remind you that on August 23, 2023, law enforcers came to Seda Suleimanova, 26, who had fled from Chechnya to Saint Petersburg, and her bridegroom and took them to the police station, explaining that the girl was suspected of stealing some jewellery. Then the young man was released, and Seda was convoyed to Grozny, where she was interrogated as a witness in a theft case and handed over to her uncle and aunt. The hired advocates were not allowed to meet Seda, citing her refusal of their services, the SK SOS Crisis Group* then reported.

Back in October 2022, Suleimanova turned to human rights defenders because she was afraid that her family might commit an "honour killing", since her relatives from Grozny were not satisfied with Seda's insufficient religiosity.

  • Law enforcers' provocations put gays in Dagestan under additional threat

Gays in Dagestan were in danger even before law enforcers held provocations and raids on them; and after the arrest of the gay blogger Matvei Volodin, threats have grown manifold. However, as noted by rights defenders, law enforcers have no real grounds to open cases against gays under the article on extremism.
