Ernest Mezak appeals against refusal of Komi capital's court to recognize postal blockade of Georgia to be illegal

On August 27, Ernest Mezak, a Board member of the "Memorial" Komi Human Rights Commissions (KHRC), lodged an appeal to the Supreme Court of the Republic against refusal of the City Court of Komi's capital, the city of Syktyvkar, to recognize illegal the Russia's postal blockade of Georgia. The claimant himself has informed the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent about it.

In his complaint submitted to the Supreme Court of the Republic of Komi, E. Mezak claims to cancel the verdict of the Syktyvkar City Court, which has rejected his claim, and to recognize illegal the inactivity of the Ministry for Informatics and Communications of the Russian Federation in the sphere of ensuring the postage service between Russia and Georgia by virtue of the fact that the absence of post exchange between these countries entails a default of Russia's international obligations in the sphere of communications and human rights.

Also, the member of the KHRC "Memorial" demands "to oblige the RF Ministry of Communications till October 2, 2007, together with the Federal Agency for Communications and the Federal State Unitary Enterprise (FSUE) "Post of Russia," to ensure renewal of mutual exchange of written correspondence and parcels between Russia and Georgia."

We remind you that on October 2, 2006, the "Post of Russia" forbade its branches to accept all kinds of mail items addressed to Georgia because of suspension of the postal communication with this country.

The KHRC "Memorial" will continue its struggle for restoration of the postal service between Russia and Georgia. Without waiting for a quite predictable decision of the cassation instance, the Commission will lodge a complaint against the actions of Russian authorities to the European Court for Human Rights.
