Sentence to native of Dagestan for helping IS* member upheld
The cassation instance has refused to satisfy the complaint against the sentence of Abdul Akaev, a native of Dagestan, convicted of financing terrorism. Akaev had transferred money to his brother, not knowing about his involvement in the "Islamic State" (IS)*, a terrorist organization, banned in Russian by the court, his defence has pointed out.
Earlier, the Tsentralny District Military Court sentenced Akaev to nine years in colony for assisting terrorist activities after he had transferred money to his brother, who, according to investigators, was an IS* member.
Akaev insists that his brother was supposed to use the transferred money to buy medicine for his wife suffering from cancer in Turkey, the "Kavkaz.Realii"* project has informed.
According to the defence, witnesses have confirmed Akaev's non-awareness of his brother's involvement in the IS*; and there are no proofs of such involvement in the case files. However, the Supreme Court has decided that the defence had failed to provide proofs of Akaev's innocence and of falsification of the charges.
*By the decision of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation, the organization was recognized as a terrorist one, and its activities in the territory of Russia are prohibited.
