Court awards compensations to two Nalchik townspeople for torture at police

The Nalchik City Court has obliged three convicted policemen to pay 150,000 and 300,000 roubles, to Alexander Knyazev and Valery Levdik, respectively, who claimed that they had been tortured. The victims disagree with the amount of compensations, Mr Knyazev has stated.

In September 2022, Vitaly Zubenko, an advocate, filed a complaint with the Supreme Court (SC) of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (KBR) against the conviction of three policemen, figurants in the case of using violence against Alexander Knyazev and Valery Levdik, residents of Nalchik. The advocate treated the punishment imposed on the policemen as too lenient.

On August 30, 2022, the court sentenced the policemen, Azamat Akkaev, Beisultan Kertov and Timur Ketov, to three years of conditional imprisonment each for torturing Knyazev and Levdik. The court reduced the claimed amount of compensation from 5 million roubles to 100,000 roubles in favour of each victim.

Neither the compensation for the moral harm, nor the imposed of punishment have satisfied the victims, Alexander Knyazev has stated, adding that "The court found unproved the use of physical force against us in order to knock out confessions to the theft of plumbing."

Let us remind you that, according to the indictment, on October 28, 2016, the above three policemen took Knyazev and Levdik to the department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA). There, both detainees were beaten up, demanding to confess their involvement in the theft, which they denied.
