Poet Shamil Arbinin convicted under case of attack on Pskov paratroopers in Chechnya

A court in Grozny has sentenced Shamil Arbinin, a Chechen poet, to 10 years in prison, finding him guilty of attacking in 2000 Pskov paratroopers as a member a detachment of the field commanders, Shamil Basaev and Khattab.

At night on March 1, 2000, in Chechnya, fighters of the sixth company of the 104th regiment of the 76th Guards Airborne Division entered into battle with a large detachment commanded by Shamil Basaev and Khattab. For about 24 hours, the company held back the onslaught of about 2000 militants who tried to break out of the encirclement. Then, 84 out of 90 paratroopers perished; 370 militants were killed. Analysts treated corruption and incompetence of the command and officers as the reasons for the tragedy.

Shamil Arbinin was found guilty of armed rebellion, participation in a gang and encroachment on militaries' lives; the court sentenced him to 10 years in prison, the "Dosh" reports.

Shamil Arbinin was born in 1976 in Grozny. Most of his works deal with philosophical and religious topics, says his interview with the "Checheninfo".
