Six persons detained in connection with attack on Pskov paratroopers

The Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF) has reported on the detention of six defendants within the case of the attack committed in 2000 by militants of Shamil Basaev on Pskov paratroopers.

All the detainees are residents of Tatarstan: Khaidar Razzakov, Airat Kamaletdinov, Eduard Valiakhmetov, Ilgam Gumerov, Ilgiz Mukhametgaliev and Mukhamedvali Shaikhutdinov. They are charged with armed rebellion, participation in a gang and encroachment on militaries' lives.

On March 1, 2000, in Chechnya, a company of Russian paratroopers entered a fight with a large detachment commanded by Shamil Basaev and Khattab. For about 24 hours, the company held back the onslaught of about 2000 militants who tried to break out of encirclement. Then, 84 out of 90 paratroopers perished, along with 370 militants. Analysts named corruption and incompetence of the company command and officers among the reasons for the tragedy.
