Azerbaijan rejects South-Ossetian presidential election

The presidential election in South Ossetia is illegitimate, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has stated today, speaking in support of Georgia's territorial integrity.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on April 10, the presidential election was held in South Ossetia. According to preliminary data, the voter turnout was 82.07%. The opposition announced the second round and declared its support for Alan Gagloev.

Georgia treats Abkhazia and South Ossetia as its territories occupied by Russia after on August 8, 2008, the latter intervened in the Georgian-South-Ossetian armed conflict, and then recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

While confirming its support for the Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity, the Azerbaijani MFA would not recognize the so-called "presidential election" held on April 10, 2022, in the Tskhinvali region of Georgia, as well as the outcomes thereof, the country's MFA said in its statement released on April 10.

The MFA has noted the importance of "continuing negotiations on a peaceful settlement of the Tskhinvali issue in accordance with the norms and principles of the international law," the statement reads, as translated by the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
