Journalists argue about attitude of residents of South Ossetia to presidential election

Militaries from South Ossetia take part in the special military operation in Ukraine, and residents of the republic are more concerned about their fate than about the presidential election, Zaur Farniev suggests. In South Ossetia, voters are in a depressed state not only because of the special military operation in Ukraine, but because of a whole range of socio-political problems, Ruslan Totrov believes.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that the presidential election in South Ossetia is scheduled for April 10, and the agitation campaign has been going on since March 16.

Residents of South Ossetia are more concerned not about the presidential election, but about the events in Ukraine, since the republic’s militaries take part in the special military operation, Zaur Farniev, a journalist of the “Kommersant” Publishing House, notes. “Personally, I get the impression that there is simply no particular interest in the election. Yes, it’s really important for people who their new president will be, but it’s not as important as, say, the global agenda, in particular, the events in Ukraine,” Zaur Farniev has told the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent.

Ruslan Totrov, an editor of the publication “OsNova”, also notes that the attention of the residents of South Ossetia is riveted to the events in Ukraine.

The analyst adds that voters in South Ossetia are in a depressed state. “The society has been driven into a deep depression: it has been driven there by the current political regime. In the past 18, maybe even 24 months, people have been clearly demonstrated by many examples that the state is ready to wipe feet on them, is ready to carry out any repressive measures simply because it, the state will not be punished for that. Beatings in prisons, brutal torture and murder of Inal Djabiev, brutal torture of his two comrades …,” Ruslan Totrov emphasized.

According to him, voters in South Ossetia are in a state of apathy due to a combination of reasons. “People have not lost their interest in the election, but faith in justice and victory has been lost,” the journalist said.
