Pashinyan announces sending CSTO peacemakers to Kazakhstan

After the appeal of the President of Kazakhstan, where mass actions are underway, accompanied by protesters' clashes with law enforcers, it was decided to send peacemakers in order to stabilize the situation in the country, Nikol Pashinyan, the Armenian Prime Minister, has stated.

Protests in Kazakhstan broke out on January 2, when prices for liquefied gas, which is massively used by motorists, were doubled. A government commission promised to cut the fuel costs, and President Kassym-Jomart Tokaev dismissed the government. However, protesters continued their mass actions.

Nikol Pashinyan, the Armenian Premier, who is currently chairing the council of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), has stated that he decided to send the CSTO peacemaking forces to Kazakhstan after the Kazhakh President Tokaev appealed about that. Mr Pashinyan has announced this today in his Facebook page.

The Armenian Prime Minister has referred not only to Tokaev's appeal, but also to the presence of "a threat to national security and the sovereignty of the Republic of Kazakhstan, caused, among other things, by outside interference."
