Armenia claims shelling in direction of Gegarkunik

Azerbaijani units have shelled the positions of the Armenian Armed Forces stationed in the Gegarkunik border section, the Armenian Ministry of Defence (MoD) has informed.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that both Azerbaijan and Armenia are regularly reporting shelling on the border. Thus, on August 13, Azerbaijan announced that the Armenian Armed Forces had opened fire on the positions of Azerbaijani militaries in the direction of the Kelbadjar and Gadabay Districts.

"On August 13, Azerbaijani militaries opened fire from various calibre firearms at the Armenian positions in the Gegarkunik section of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border," the website of the Armenian MoD has stated, adding that Armenian militaries opened fire in response.

The conflict on the border of the Syunik and Gegarkunik Regions broke out in mid-May. Yerevan claims that Azerbaijani militaries had entered the Armenian territory and set up a foothold there. In its turn, Baku insists that its border guards only changed their deployment, while staying within the Lachin and Kelbadjar Districts. Armed incidents regularly occur on this section of the border.
