Ingush activist Ali Khamkhoev sentenced to nine months of imprisonment in a penal colony

The Zheleznovodsk City Court found Ali Khamkhoev, a participant in a rally in Magas, guilty of using violence against a fighter of the National Guard of Russia. However, taking into account the time spent by the defendant in a SIZO (pre-trial prison), the Court released the activist from custody. Ali Khamkhoev became the 37th activist sentenced to imprisonment for participation in the protests in Ingushetia, the Human Rights Centre (HRC) “Memorial”* reported.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on November 26, 2020, Ali Khamkhoev was detained at home in Nazran in connection with the investigation into the case on the rally in Magas.

On March 26, 2019, residents of Ingushetia continued their protest rally in Magas without a sanction from the authorities. In the morning on March 27, protesters clashed with the police. Starting since the early April of 2019, mass arrests of oppositionists took place in Ingushetia.

Today, Anna Nikityuk, Judge of the Zheleznovodsk City Court, has sentenced Ali Khamkhoev to nine months of imprisonment in a common-security penal colony for using non-dangerous violence against public officers at the protest rally in Magas in 2019, the HRC “Memorial”* reports.

Ali Khamkhoev was accused of throwing a bottle and hitting a helmet of a fighter of the National Guard of Russia during the dispersal of the rally on March 27, 2019. Ali Khamkhoev pleaded guilty in part, but denied any political motive in his actions. The public prosecutor requested the Court to sentence the defendant to one year and four months of imprisonment in a common-security penal colony. Judge Anna Nikityuk noted that Ali Khamkhoev committed the crime, being guided by a political motive, the HRC “Memorial”* reports on its website.
