In January 2021, 12 people fell victim to the armed conflict in Northern Caucasus. Of them, six were killed and six others were wounded. These are the results of the calculations run by the “Caucasian Knot” based on its own materials and information from other open sources.

In Chechnya, during an attempt of detention, six members of the armed underground grouping led by Aslan Byutukaev, who were on the wanted list, were killed. Five of them were killed by return fire, and the sixth suspect committed a suicide bombing. During the shootout, five law enforcers were wounded.

The “Caucasian Knot” notes that the provided statistics cannot reflect the number of victims with 100 percent accuracy. Not all information is included in the news reports. It is not always possible to check the reliability of the statements voiced by the law enforcement bodies. Besides, new facts about the events of the reporting period become often known after the statistics had been already published on the “Caucasian Knot”.

On January 30, in Ingushetia, Kureish Djandigov, Islam Zhandigov, and Adam Khashiev were detained in the course of the investigation into a case against the “Imarat Kavkaz”, a terrorist community, which activities were banned in Russia by the court decision. According to eyewitnesses, during the detention, law enforcers shot Adam Khashiev in his leg.

In Dagestan, Kabardino-Balkaria, Karachay-Cherkessia, North Ossetia-Alania, and the Stavropol Territory, no victims of the armed conflict were registered in January.
