Analysts differ in assessing relevance of film on oppressing women in Caucasus

The problem of domestic violence in Northern Caucasus is acute, including in connection with the growth of religiosity, said Saida Sirazhudinova, the president of the "Caucasus. Peace. Development" Centre. It is necessary to talk about the violation of women's rights taking into account the cultural specifics of the region, says Olga Pavlova, an Islamologist.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that residents of Northern Caucasus criticized the film posted on the YouTube channel of the "Redactsiya" (Editorial Board) Project, stating that its authors have one-sidedly presented Northern Caucasus to the audience.

Saida Sirazhudinova has highlighted the problem of religious fanaticism, adding that after screening of such films, their heroines get under pressure.

Ingush traditions do not allow beating up women, said Zeinep Dzarakhova, an ethnographer. She is sure that cases of domestic violence against women are rare in the republic. Besides, women in Ingushetia "are becoming scientists, doctors, and make progress both in their careers and in business."

Olga Pavlova, an Islamologist, has noted that she knows many North-Caucasian women. "Among my girlfriends in this region there are a lot of teachers, scientists, public figures. They are very sociable, interesting interlocutors; many speak foreign languages. Among them, I didn't notice anyone who could be treated as victims of violence," she said.
