BCA leaves Mamed Ibragim in custody

The Baku Court of Appeal (BCA) has dismissed the complaint against the arrest of Mamed Ibragim, a member of the Presidium of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA). He was brought to criminal responsibility in connection with the July 15 unsanctioned rally in Baku. According to Ibragim, he did not take part in the rally and did not send anyone there.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Mamed Ibragim was charged under four articles of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan. He is accused, among other things, of rendering resistance to state officials and of committing the acts aimed at violent seizure of power. Mamed Ibragim faces up to 20 years in prison.

On July 15, in Baku, a march took place in support of the Azerbaijani army, which ended in clashes with the police. The Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA) reported that dozens of party activists had been detained.

The complaint against the ruling of the Nasimi District Court of Baku, which arrested Ibragim for 4 months, was considered by the BCA on August 7, the advocate, Asabali Mustafaev, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

"Mamed Ibragim has stated at the BCA that his arrest was groundless and illegal. He noted that he did not participate in the action on July 14-15 and did not send anyone there; did not incite to any illegal actions and, moreover, committed no violent seizure of power," said the advocate.

Mustafaev has noted that the defence will continue seeking the release of Ibragim from custody and will lodge a petition to the court of first instance demanding to change custody for house arrest.
