Detentions
On July 3, the Russian Federal Security Bureau (FSB) announced the detention in the Karachay-Cherkessian Republic (KChR) of five members of the extremist religious grouping "At-Takfir Val-Hijra", banned in Russia by the court. According to investigators, Islamists propagated radical views, recruited new members, urged believers to neglect the legislation, and advocated the creation of a theocratic Islamic state, a caliphate, in Northern Caucasus. They kept a traumatic pistol converted for firing live cartridges, ammunition, a shotgun of a hunting rifle, an air pistol, cold steel and extremist literature. The Cherkessk City Court ruled to place two detainees in custody; two other suspects were placed under house arrest.
The "Caucasian Knot" hereby emphasizes that the above statistics cannot completely reflect the number of victims. Not all the information from law enforcement bodies and power structures gets into news bulletins. It is not always possible to verify whether law enforcers' statements are true, and some events become known after the period for which statistics is provided.
