Armenian opposition demands to recognize constitutional amendments illegal
The "Prosperous Armenia" oppositional parliamentary faction has filed a lawsuit with the Constitutional Court (CC), in which it challenged the earlier amendments to the Constitution, which provide for the dismissal of the CC head.
Yesterday (on June 26), the amendments to the Constitution, adopted on June 22 by the Armenian Parliament and implying the termination of powers of CC Judges, entered into force. The CC Judges have announced their intention to defend their rights in court.
The Parliament was supposed to send the adopted changes for approval to the CC, but the MPs have opposed this. The "Enlightened Armenia" Party declared the illegality of the actions of the National Assembly (Parliament) and sent a statement yesterday with 26 signatures of MPs, in which it challenged the amendments to the Constitution.
The situation around the CC is "the overthrow of the constitutional order", Ruben Melikyan, a co-founder of the NGO "Legal Way", a former Nagorno-Karabakh Ombudsman, stated live on of the "Azatutyun" Radio yesterday.
