AI demands to release Elchin Mamed

Elchin Mamed was arrested after his critical report on the observance of human rights in Azerbaijan, the "Amnesty International (AI) has stated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Elchin Mamed, the head of the NGO "Legal Enlightenment of Sumgait Youth" and the editor-in-chief of the website "Yukselish Namine" (For the Renaissance), was detained on March 30. The next day, the court arrested him for three months.

The AI has invited people to send appeals to Azerbaijani President, Ilham Aliev, and the country's Ambassador to the USA, Elin Suleimanov, demanding the immediate release of Elchin Mamed. Human rights defenders have noted that Elchin and the NGO headed by him had earlier been harassed by the authorities.

The new criminal case is also based on far-fetched charges and is a revenge for his human rights activities and critical reports on the human rights situation in Azerbaijan, the "Turan" News Agency cited the AI's statement on April 3.
