Azerbaijani residents mark Genocide Day being under quarantine
Today, Azerbaijan marks the Genocide Day in connection with the events of March 1918 without mass events because of the spread of the coronavirus infection.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Azerbaijan marks the day of March 31 as the Day of Genocide of Azerbaijanis in connection with the events of March 1918. According to the Azerbaijani version of the events, in late March 1918, with the support of Bolshevik leaders of the Baku Council, the armed formations of the Armenian nationalist "Dashnaktsutyun" Party, led by Stepan Shaumyan, carried out mass killings and pogroms of Azerbaijanis.
Today, Azerbaijan does not hold any mass events on the occasion of the tragic date because of the special quarantine regime imposed in the country. However, all TV Channels broadcasted programmes dedicated to the events of 1918.
On the eve of the 102nd anniversary of the tragic events, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a special statement in which it called the 1918 March events "a pre-planned and brutally implemented ethnic cleansing policy against Azerbaijanis." "Civilians were massively killed, villages were burned down, and monuments of national culture were destroyed," the Azerbaijani MFA stated.
