US congressmen reproach Georgian authorities for persecuting opposition

In Georgia, the failure of the constitutional amendment to hold parliamentary elections and the persecution of protesters adversely affect the country's image, the US Congress notes. The congressmen's appeal will affect the electoral sympathies of Georgian voters, political analysts suggest.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on November 14, 2019, the parliamentary majority from the ruling "Georgian Dream" Party failed the constitutional amendment to hold the 2020 parliamentary elections solely on the basis of a proportional system. After that, mass protests began in Georgia.

The discontent of US congressmen should alert the Georgian government, believes Giorgi Gobronidze, Professor in Social Studies at the European Institute of Georgia.

A similar opinion was expressed by political analyst Gela Vasadze. However, according to him, the discontent of US congressmen can affect the sympathy of Georgian voters. "The authority of the United States as a partner is very high in Georgia," Gela Vasadze explained.

Most of Georgian residents do not support any political party. Meanwhile, 59% of the country's residents believe there is no democracy in Georgia, as follows from a survey conducted by the National Democratic Institute (NDI).

"More than 60 percent of Georgian voters do not show their political views. However, at the same time, most people are dissatisfied with the country's development," Giorgi Gobronidze noted.
