Kabardino-Balkaria commemorates victims of political repressions
Today, the Nalchik branch office of the Russia's Association of Victims of Political Repressions holds a memory day of those who suffered from repressions. On the memory day, representatives of almost all the nations inhabiting Kabardino-Balkaria came there: political repressions touched on everybody.
Svetlana Turchina, head of the branch office, told the correspondent of the "Caucasian Knot" that in total for Kabardino-Balkaria, 55,000 persons became victims. Including the Balkarian people as a whole.
Thereafter, all those repressed in Kabardino-Balkaria and other North-Caucasian Republics, with rare exclusions, were rehabilitated. They received certain privileges, and Balkarians were paid out monetary compensations for lost property. Boris Yeltsin, former president of Russia, brought them official apologies on behalf of the state. Still, many children of repressed parents do not know where their murdered fathers and mothers were buried.
