Residents of Chechnya appeal to human rights defenders after disappearance of a relative

On October 18, it became known that on September 9, 47-year-old Ramzan Shaikhaev, who had arrived in Argun in Chechnya to visit his sick father, disappeared. Relatives filed complaints to the police and the Prosecutor's Office, as well as the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial". Last summer, Ramzan Shaikhaev and his wife were already detained by Chechen law enforcers who did not bring any charge against them, but kept a wife of Ramzan Shaikhaev for several days and himself for a month. The law enforcers set free the spouses, but seized their car, gold jewellery, and other valuables, relatives claim. Friends of Ramzan Shaikhaev believe that he aroused interest among law enforcers solely because of his appearance: being a devout Muslim, he wore a long beard.
