Action in support of those accused of riots held in Tbilisi

More than a hundred people took part in an action in support of those accused of organizing the riots on June 20 in Tbilisi, the organizers have informed.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in July, the General Prosecutor's Office (GPO) of Georgia qualified the protests in Tbilisi as an attempt to overthrow the existing power. The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) reported detention of four activists suspected of assaulting policemen.

The protests in Tbilisi began on June 20, after an MP of the Russian State Duma took the chair of the Speaker of the Georgian Parliament at a sitting of the inter-parliamentary assembly. This outraged some of the MPs, who were supported by oppositionists. They demanded to remove the Russian delegation from the building, citing the fact that "Russia had occupied Abkhazia and South Ossetia."

The action was mainly attended by members of the "Victorious Georgia" Party and defendants' relatives. According to organizers, after the rally on June 20, 19 people were criminally prosecuted.

"This is political persecution of the people who expressed their opinion," said Konstantin Kemulariya, the leader of the "Victorious Georgia".
