ECtHR accepts complaint against verdict to Ruslan Rakhaev

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has registered a complaint against the verdict passed to Ruslan Rakhaev, the head of the criminal investigation division of the city of Cherkessk. He was sentenced to nine years within the case of beating up a detainee to death, the "Public Verdict" Fund has informed.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 15, 2018, the court also deprived Rakhaev of the rank of police captain and decided to collect a million roubles from him in favour of the victims.

According to the accusation, on October 7, 2011, Rakhaev beat the arrested Dakhir Djankezov to death. The suffered person in the case, Khadji Djadtoev, said that Rakhaev had beaten him up too, but the defendant himself said that he had first seen Djadtoev.

According to Oleg Novikov, the press secretary of the "Public Verdict" Fund, in the Rakhaev's case, investigators and the court violated the right to the presumption of innocence and to the efficient remedy. The advocates for Rakhaev were deprived of the chance to provide the court with proofs of the policeman's innocence.

The accusation is based only on testimonies of the policemen, who detained Djankezov, a source from the "Public Verdict" asserts. "The real perpetrators of the crime have not been punished," Mr Novikov has stated.

Let us note that on June 20, Lyubov, Ruslan Rakhaev's mother, sent a complaint to the "direct line" of the Russian president about a seven-year red tape in investigating her son's case and an unfair sentence. She failed to reach Mr Putin by telephone.
