Georgian opposition talks to Tusk about EU sanctions

At their meeting with Donald Tusk, the President of the European Council, Georgian oppositionists raised the issue of imposing sanctions of the European Union (EU) on Bidzina Ivanishvili.

The main opposition's message to Mr Tusk at the meeting on July 11 in Batumi concerned the persecution of activists by Bidzina Ivanishvili, said Salome Samadashvili, an MP from the United National Movement (UNM) Party.

"One of the main issues is the huge threat faced by democracy in our country, after Ivanishvili announced the persecution of the political opposition. We see that people's protest, to which the authorities fail to adequately respond, continues for weeks," Ms Samadashvili said on air of the "Rustavi-2" TV Company.

Donald Tusk, the President of the European Council, has also met the Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili. He welcomed the decision to hold parliamentary elections in Georgia in 2020 under the proportional system, which, he believes, should contribute to the progress of democracy in the country.
