Man accused of terror acts in North Ossetia sentenced to 19 years of imprisonment

The North-Caucasian District Military Court found Ingush native Aslan Yandiev guilty of committing two terror acts in North Ossetia.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that since 2007, Aslan Yandiev had been on the international wanted list. In January 2011, he was detained in Slovakia, and in July 2018, he was extradited to Russia. At trial, public prosecutor requested to sentence Aslan Yandiev to 20 years of imprisonment, but suggested to free the defendant from the charge of an attempt to kill people during the terror act on the "Vladikavkaz-2" electrical power substation. The defence called the charges "far-fetched" and noted that 20 years of imprisonment is too severe punishment for a crime without human victims.

Today, the court has sentenced Aslan Yandiev to 19 years of imprisonment in a high security colony. He was found guilty under all articles charged, except an attempted murder of two or more persons.

According to the public prosecutor, in the autumn of 2005, Aslan Yandiev joined militants led by Shamil Basaev. Together with his accomplices, he organized a shelling of the "Vladikavkaz-2" electrical power substation, as well as two explosions in Vladikavkaz on February 2, 2006. During one of them, three persons were killed, and 39 others were injured in a slot machine club. Aslan Yandiev is also accused of laying an improvised explosive device (IED) and three IED explosions in Vladikavkaz and the Prigorodny District of North Ossetia.
