Head of Dagestan opposed unilateral transfer of land to Chechnya

The installation by Chechnya of the road signs, which have caused discontent among residents of the Kizlyar District, has nothing to do with territorial disputes; the conflict is artificially fuelled, Vladimir Vasiliev, the head of Dagestan, has stated. The authorities of Chechnya should have warned about the installation of signs on the border, said Vladimir Ivanov, the head of Vasiliev's administration.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 10, a video appeared on the Internet, in which young people demolished one of the road signs with the words "Shelkovskoy District" in the outskirt of Kizlyar. The signs will be reinstalled, said Magomed Daudov, Speaker of the Chechen Parliament. He reprimanded Alexander Pogorelov, the head of the Kizlyar District.

Dagestan will not cede its territory unilaterally; and all the disputable issues will be brought up for discussion, including with the participation of local residents, Mr Vasiliev has assured.

There are no systemic contradictions between the two republics, but there are those, who are interested in exacerbating the situation, Vladimir Vasiliev believes.

"We won't let anyone to rock the situation in their own interests, which are difficult to understand from the viewpoint of the interests of multinational Dagestan," the RIA "Dagestan" quoted him as saying.
