Law enforcers cordon off courthouse because of trial of Ingush elder Barakhoev

The courthouse in Nalchik, where a session is underway on extending the arrest of the Ingush elder Akhmed Barakhoev, was surrounded by armed law enforcers. Relatives were not allowed into the courtroom, Fatima Urusova, an advocate, has stated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on April 30, the Supreme Court (SC) of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (KBR) upheld the decision to arrest Barakhoev until June 11.

On March 26, residents of Ingushetia extended, without an authorities' permit, the protest action held in a square in Magas, which led to clashes with law enforcers. According to investigators, ten law enforcers were injured in clashes. Three protest leaders – Akhmed Barakhoev, Musa Malsagov and Barakh Chemurziev – were arrested within the case of appeals to mass riots and using violence against law enforcers. According to the calculations of the "Caucasian Knot", at least 96 activists were persecuted after the mass protests of March this year in Ingushetia.

"For the first time ever, that there are trials against activists of the protest movement in Ingushetia, law enforcement bodies have taken such unprecedented measures to guard the courthouse," Ms Urusova has stated.

Let us remind you that while in custody, on April 4-13, Barakhoev held a hunger strike. This protest was unique for Ingushetia, because the elder sought to respect not only his rights, but the rights of other persons.
