Court refuses to release Ingush elder Akhmed Barakhoev from arrest

The Supreme Court (SC) of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (KBR) has upheld the decision to arrest the Ingush activist Akhmed Barakhoev until June 11, 2019.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on April 26, Akhmed Barakhoev's advocate, Fatima Urusova, found out that he had been transferred from Nalchik to Vladikavkaz.

Three leaders of protests in Ingushetia – Akhmed Barakhoev, Musa Malsagov and Barakh Chemurziev – were arrested on charges of calls to mass riot and using violence against law enforcers. Under arrest, Barakhoev held a hunger strike on April 4-13. This protest was unique to Ingushetia because the elder sought to respect not only his rights, but the rights of other people.

The defence has exhausted all the possibilities of justice in Russia; and there is only hope for the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR), said Ms Urusova. "When preparing a complaint to the ECtHR, we intend to ask to consider it as a matter of priority, due to the fact that it concerns the health of an elderly person," the advocate has explained.

Together with Barakhoev, Malsag Uzhakhov, the head of the Ingush Council of Teips (family clans), was also convoyed from Nalchik to Vladikavkaz. On April 29, the KBR's SC refused to transfer him under house arrest.
