Ingush elder Akhmed Barakhoev feels better after hunger strike

After his hunger strike, the Ingush elder, Akhmed Barakhoev has sharply aggravated stomach pains; he needs a medical examination and a special diet, his advocate, Fatima Urusova, has stated. The hunger strike has made the disease acute, but it's difficult to ensure a strict diet in custody, Akhmed's son, Ilez Barakhoev, has noted.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on April 13, the arrests in Nalchik of three leaders of protests in Ingushetia – Akhmed Barakhoev, Musa Malsagov and Barakh Chemurziev – were over; however, none of them was set free. The court arrested Barakhoev for two months under the criminal case of using violence against a law enforcer.

From April 4 on, Akhmed Barakhoev held a hunger strike at the Nalchik IVS (temporary detention centre). His hunger strike was unique for Ingushetia, because the elder sought to respect not only his rights, but the rights of other people.

The judge has used the videos, in which the elder persuaded young people to disperse and not to give in to provocations, when the rally was declared unsanctioned, against Barakhoev, his advocate believes.

Barakhoev had a consultation appointed at a clinic in Saint Petersburg, and he had planned to go there to take care of his health, but he stayed at the request of law enforcers in order to convince young people not to commit rash acts, his son Ilez has explained.

"The court has decided that the sick elderly person will not get treated, but will launch criminal activities. This is a demonstrative execution of the elderly person, so that everyone knows that acting against the authorities is fraught with severe punishment," Ilez Barakhoev believes.
