NDI poll indicates growth of pro-Western sentiments in Georgia

More than 80% of residents of Georgia are supporting the idea of joining the European Union (EU), while the share of opponents of Georgia's membership in the NATO dropped over the last six months from 17% to 13%, showed the survey conducted by the NDI (National Democratic Institute) and the CRRC (Caucasus Research Resources Centre).

On January 28, the NDI and the CRRC-Georgia presented in Tbilisi the outcomes of the sociological survey conducted in December 2018 in Georgia.

The authors of the study compared the outcomes with the data of the previous survey, conducted in June 2018, when respondents were asked in different order the same questions as six months later, in December. According to the study, in six months, the support for the aims declared by the government of joining NATO and the EU increased noticeably: 81% of the respondents supported the Georgia's accession to the EU in June 2018, and 83% – in December.

In December 2018, the aim of joining the NATO, declared by the government of Georgia, was supported by 78% of the respondents – three percentage points higher than in June 2018. At the same time, the share of people who oppose Georgia's entry into the NATO has decreased – from 17% in June down to 13% in December 2018.
