Oyub Titiev's defence claims formal approach of court
The refusal to release Oyub Titiev under guarantees demonstrated the formal approach of the court, and the decision to leave him in a cage proved neglect of the European Court's recommendations, stated Ilya Novikov, an advocate of the rights defender.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on November 20, the defence filed a motion for the release of Oyub Titiev under the personal guarantees of Svetlana Gannushkina, the chair of the "Civic Assistance Committee" and Grigory Yavlinsky, the leader of the "Yabloko" Party. The court dismissed the motion and did not allow the rights defender to sit in the courtroom next to his advocates.
The head of the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial" office in Grozny is charged with marijuana possession, and he has been in custody since January 11. He claims that the drugs had been planted to him by law enforcers.
Ilya Novikov, the advocate of the rights defender, has noted that the defence will challenge the court's decision regarding the stay of Oyub Titiev in a cage.
In Moscow, participants in an action in support of Oyub Titiev brought their own belongings, and visitors could make donations and buy them, reported Polina Filippova, a coordinator of the Sakharov Centre's volunteer department, an organizer of the action.
The HRC "Memorial" transferred the proceeds of 130,000 roubles to the Oyub Titiev's family members, reported Anna Dobrovolskaya, the executive director of the HRC.
She has noted that the Oyub Titiev's family members are in a difficult financial situation without their breadwinner, and the amount raised was a significant help for the rights defender's relatives.
