Zurabishvili in the lead at presidential election in Georgia

According to the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Georgia, about 90% of all the votes have been tabulated. The independent candidate Salome Zurabishvili, supported by the "Georgian Dream" Party, has won 38.61% of the votes. Grigol Vashadze from the "United National Movement" (UNM) has 37.69%.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that October 28, the voting took place at the presidential election in Georgia. Oppositionists and NGOs claimed numerous violations during the voting; and the Georgian police have launched inquiry into seven incidents.

In order to win in the first round, a candidate must gain more than 50% of all the votes.

Let us note here that, according to the amendments to the Constitution of Georgia, adopted on September 26, 2017, this election is the last held by direct vote. From 2024 on, the president will be elected by the electoral collegium. Since November 17, 2013, the president of Georgia is Giorgi Margvelashvili.
