ICRF reports about Ingush participant in conflict in Syria

A resident of Ingushetia left for Syria, where he joined a terrorist organization, reports today the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF).

According to the ICRF, a 21-year-old resident of the republic left for Syria in April 2017. There, he voluntarily joined an armed organization, recognized in Russia as a terrorist organization.

Investigators believe that the suspect "performs the functions of an ordinary militant" and he "did not attempt to voluntarily leave an international terrorist organization." A criminal case has been instituted against him, the "Interfax" reports with reference to the press service of the ICRF's Department for Ingushetia.

The ICRF's Department has not specified the details concerning the activities of the man suspected of involvement in the terrorist organization. The name of the terrorist organization has also not been reported.

According to the Ingush Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), as of January 2017, since the beginning of the war in Syria, about 200 residents of Ingushetia have joined the terrorist organization "Islamic State" (IS) banned in Russia by the court. 25% of them were killed, and ten persons returned to the homeland. In May 2017, Ingush leader Yunus-Bek Evkurov reported that five out of seven residents of the republic returned to peaceful life.
