Red Cross visits Karen Gazaryan detained in Azerbaijan

In Baku, agents of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) visited Karen Gazaryan, a citizen of Armenia, who disappeared 20 days ago. Karen Gazaryan was handed over a letter from his mother.

The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent has been informed by the spokesperson for the ICRC's Yerevan office that in Baku, his colleagues visited persons deprived of liberty as a result of the Karabakh conflict, including Karen Gazaryan, "with the purpose of monitoring the condition of their detention and treatment, as well as facilitating communication with their relatives."

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Karen Gazaryan, born in 1984, disappeared in the Berdavan village in the Tavoush District of Armenia at night on July 14-15. The Azerbaijani Ministry of Defence (MoD) reported "prevention of sabotage and seizure of intelligence agent Karen Gazaryan in the Gazakh District." The Police of Armenia denied the information disseminated by the Azerbaijani MoD regarding Karen Gazaryan.

On August 2, Anna Akopyan, a spouse of the Armenian Prime Minister, visited parents of Karen Gazaryan in their house in the Berdavan village. On her Facebook page, Anna Akopyan noted that she got the information from Dominic Liegma, the head of the ICRC's mission in Armenia, about Karen Gazaryan, who was taken prisoner in Azerbaijan. "Agents of the ICRC handed over to Karen a letter from his mother, and Karen himself said that everything was all right with him," writes Anna Akopyan.
