Native of Dagestan convicted for plotting terror act in Saint Petersburg

Shamil Omargadjiev, a native of Dagestan, has been sentenced to 2.5 years of freedom deprivation for illegal arms possession and for the fact that, knowing about the preparation of a terror act in the Kazan Cathedral, he failed to inform the police about it.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on December 17, 2017, President Vladimir Putin thanked the CIA, which, as he said, had helped prevent terror acts in Saint Petersburg. Seven persons were detained, including Omargadjiev.

On December 15, 2017, the Russian FSB announced the detention in Saint Petersburg of seven members of the "Islamic State" (IS), a terrorist organization banned in Russia by the court. According to the FSB, they had "planned to commit terror acts by blowing up a self-suicide bomber in one of the religious institutions, as well as killings of citizens and explosions of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in other crowded places."
