"Sasna Tsrer" supporters demand purges in Prosecutor's Office and courts of Armenia

The Prosecutor's Office and the judicial system should be cleared of those persons who carried out an order of the previous Armenian authorities to persecute the opposition. This was stated by participants of a rally in support of defendants from the number of the detachment "Sasna Tsrer" activists.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that starting from May 11, supporters of the detachment "Sasna Tsrer" demand to release members of the unit. On May 21, activists blocked a building of the General Prosecutor's Office and accused the General Prosecutor of a desire to return the Serzh Sargsyan's regime.

The armed detachment "Sasna Tsrer" seized a building of the patrol-and-post service in Yerevan and held it from July 17 till July 30, 2016. On May 16, despite the protests, the court refused to grant motions filed by defenders of ten members of the detachment "Sasna Tsrer" and mitigate their sentences.

With his inaction, the General Prosecutor covered the Serzh Sargsyan's criminal regime, and after the "velvet" revolution, there is no place for him within the state administration system, stated Zaruhi Postandjyan, the leader of the "Apricot Country" Party.

According to her, General Prosecutor Arthur Davtyan abused his power.

Activist Vardges Gaspari believes the General Prosecutor should resign because of his position on the issue of political prisoners.

The protesters have demanded to institute criminal cases against former President Serzh Sargsyan and Yerevan Mayor Taron Margaryan, whose resignation they seek.

Earlier, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has requested to stop the protests and called them acts of sabotage.
